I was at City Hall last week. No, not to declare my candidacy, although we could do worse. I had to get a parking permit. As it was lunchtime, there was a lineup – not a long one, but a slow one. I don’t know why people have complicated parking situations, but they do. In any case, I was killing time playing Plants Vs Zombies 2 on my phone, when the man behind me (dressed entirely in Leafs wear) took out HIS phone and started blasting music. No headphones – just blaring tunes through the tinny little phone speaker, which he held up for all to hear. And not just any music. He was playing some swamp blues … maybe Muddy Waters, or Lightnin’ Hopkins. Good stuff, if you’re in the mood, but no one was. Toronto City Hall on a Tuesday lunch hour is no place for a searing zydeco version of “Baby Scratch My Back”. He got a lot of cold stares, but he didn’t care. Probably had a bottle of tequila waiting for him back in the misty bayou.
A couple of days later, I was walking the dogs with my sister. We were waiting to cross the road at the lights when a cop car pulled up hard at the red and ended up about 5 feet over the line. Whoops. The officer (young, cute) gave us a sheepish look as he backed up (there was no one behind him), then, as we walked through the intersection, he rolled down the window and yelled “don’t tell anybody!” I smiled and gave him the thumbs up, but clearly I lied.
On Sunday, we went to the mall for a little retail before Louise flew home to Amsterdam. Sherway Gardens is undergoing a massive renovation/expansion, and the parking lots have been severely impacted. I had no problem finding a spot, but when we went to leave, I had more or less been sealed in by a row of cars behind me. I couldn’t back the car up for love or money, and I tried both. Bless the couple that came along and took up positions at the front and back of the car to guide me out. Fifteen minutes and a 67 point turn later, I was free. Sherway, I love you, but you need hot and cold running valets free of charge to get you through this reno.
