It’s not just happy wife happy life, being married for a long time is good for both of you.
A recent study shows that the divorced, widowed and never wed have more chronic health problems and less mobility as they age than people who stay in a continuous marriage. And they continue to suffer more ailments, even if they remarry.
Researchers at the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore found that divorced and widowed people experienced 20% more health woes, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. They also had a 23% increase in mobility problems, evident by trouble climbing stairs and walking short distances. Study co-author Linda Waite says the enormous financial and emotional stress associated with divorce or the death of a spouse causes permanent damage, leading to a higher incidence of American’s two biggest killers heart disease and cancer. And remarrying even happily isn’t a solution. Says Waite: “You move from a state where you’re getting damaged to where you’re taking care of yourself, but you still have the damage.”
