According to a study done in the UK (where else?) Swearing helps to relieve stress and is not ‘necessarily a negative thing’ says Dr Richard Stephens, a researcher and psychologist at Keele University, ‘It can be a linguistic tool when dealing with frustrating events’. In the study participants submerged their hands in ice water for as long as possible. They were then asked to repeat either a swear word or a word that wouldn’t make their grandmother cringe. And yes the people who swore were able to tolerate the pain longer than those who were only permitted to say neutral words. Swearing appears to trigger a flight or fight response, said Stephens, which then releases endorphins that diminish the pain. So let the f word rip and feel better!!!
