HIGHEST NUMBER OF SPOILED BALLOTS SINCE ’75
More than 31,000 voters in Ontario opted to decline their ballots in last week’s provincial election. Unofficial results show 31,399 voters spoiled their ballot — the highest amount since 1975.
PRIDE, NXNE CLOSE DOWNTOWN STREETS
Beginning tonight, the ‘North by Northeast’ music festival and World Pride 2014 will close several downtown streets for the weekend.
Opening ceremonies of World Pride 2014 at Nathan Phillips Square will close the following streets from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday:
- Bay Street, from Queen Street to Dundas Street
- Hagerman Street, from Elizabeth Street to Bay Street
- Elizabeth Street, from Dundas Street to Hagerman Street
- Albert Street, from Bay Street to James Street
- James Street, from Queen Street to Albert Street
- Toronto Transit Commission Bay Street bus service will also be affected.
The North By Northeast music festival will also impact downtown commuters.
Yonge Street will be closed between Dundas and Queen streets during the following hours:
- Friday from 7 p.m. until midnight
- Saturday from 6 p.m. until midnight
- Sunday from 6 p.m. until midnight
POSSIBLE 4th BIG CANADIAN WIRELESS CARRIER
Quebecor wants to become Canada’s fourth national wireless carrier; if barriers such as high roaming fees and tower sharing problems are removed. Quebecor, who already provides cellphone service to about 500,000 customers in Quebec, told shareholders that it’s looking at expansion beyond the province. Quebecor says they would like to provide Canadians with a low-cost wireless choice, making the market more competitive.
NEW YORK TO LEGALIZE MEDICAL MARIJUANA
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state lawmakers announced a tentative deal to make New York the 23rd state to legalize medical marijuana. The bill has not yet been released, but according to reports, it will prohibit smoking marijuana. Patients will only be allowed to consume pills, edibles and vaporize marijuana. The no-smoking clause of the bill was a serious demand of Cuomoa and his administration.
WORLD CUP: ITALY VS URUGUAY
England’s World Cup campaign has just begun, yet it’s already almost over after a 2 – 1 loss yesterday to Uruguay. Mathematically they’re still capable of qualifying if Italy wins their match against Costa Rica today at 12pm EST on CBC, and their final group stage match against Uruguay on June 24. If Italy prevails undefeated through the group stage, England must then defeat Costa Rica to advance.
