WORLD CUP BRIDGE COLLAPSE
At least two people were killed when an overpass bridge under construction collapsed in one of the World Cup host cities, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Two buses and at least one car were damaged in the collapse. Belo Horizonte will host Tuesday’s semifinal game between the winner of today’s France-Germany match and the winner of the Brazil-Colombia game.
BOUCHARD MAKES HISTORY AT WIMBLEDON
After a near flawless match against Romania’s Simona Halep, Eugenie Bouchard won the semifinals of Wimbledon and will now be playing in the finals, the first time a Canadian has ever done so. The 20-year-old from Montreal will be playing her first finals at a Grand Slam tournament this Saturday. She achieved her first WTA title earlier this year in Germany, and is the first woman to make it to her third straight Grand Slam semifinal since Dinara Safina in 2009. Bouchard is now guaranteed a top-10 ranking (she’s currently ranked at 13); she’ll rank No. 7 with a loss, and No. 6 if she wins. Bouchard will be facing Czech’s Petra Kvitova in the finals.
FORMER ‘NEWS OF THE WORLD’ EDITOR SENTENCED TO 18 MONTHS IN PRISON
Former confidant of and advisor to the British prime minister and former editor of The News of The World, Andy Coulson has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for phone hacking. Coulson denied sanctioning hacking as editor of The News of The World throughout his eight-month trial but the jury found him to be guilty. At the sentencing today, Mr Justice Saunders said the hacking of murdered teenager Milly Dowler’s phone was “unforgivable”. Coulson’s former NoTW colleagues Nevile Thurlbeck, James Weatherup and Greg Miskiw, as well as private investigator Glenn Mulcaire were all sentenced. They all admitted to the offence previous to the trial’s start. “Mr Coulson has to take the major shame for the blame of phone hacking at the NoTW. He knew about it, he encouraged it when he should have stopped it,” The judge said. There was no reaction from Coulson as he was jailed.

ANDRÉ 3000 STEPS INTO JIMI HENDRIX’S SHOES
André Benjamin, who you probably know better as Outkast’s André 3000, stars as Jimi Hendrix in a new biopic out this September. The movie was unable to actually use any of Hendrix’s music, but from the looks of the trailer, it won’t make that big a difference. André seems to channel the psychedelic vibe of Hendrix with ease. “Jimi: All Is By My Side” tells the guitarist’s early story between 1966 and ’67, before he became the legend he is now known as. The trailer makes it look like a must-see trip. “Jimi” is written and directed by John Ridley, who won the Oscar this year for penning “12 Years a Slave.” The movie opens hits the big screen Sept. 26.
ALL YOU CAN EAT POUTINE RESTURANT TO OPEN IN TORONTO
Fellow Torontonians, it’s time to bust out the stretchy pants! All-you-can-eat poutine is coming to town. PoutineVille: a well-known Montreal-based chain of restaurants that specializes in poutine is about to set-up shop in Toronto, with their first location in the Annex neighbourhood (by Bloor St. and Brunswick Ave.) The sit-down restaurant will boast a menu that gives patrons a choice to select from a list of specialty poutines, or the option of creating their own plates from an “a la carte” list of ingredients. PoutineVille is the brainchild Tony Rea, Kosta Kariotakis, and Camillo Fresco; three friends who wanted to reinvent the iconic Canadian dish. The company has gained a loyal following for its $15 all-you-can-eat deal and its rightly-named “Heart Attack Challenge.”
Here’s what the “Heart Attack” looks like:
And there’s also a poutine grilled cheese on the menu.
They do offer salads too… if for some reason that’s what you want…
