Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” has been the on-field entrance music for the New York Yankees’ Mariano Rivera since 1999. Since Major League Baseball’s all-time greatest closer retired last year, it seems the band has been left trying to fill a void, begging for work.
The 30-second ad — which will reportedly air Monday night during the Home Run Derby — begins with “SportsCenter” anchor Jay Harris, with a perfectly deadpan expression, explaining how the rockers don’t have much to do around ESPN headquarters since Rivera retired last year.
Metallica gives a call to Duke’s Coach Krzyzewski and golfer John Daly, both of whom turn them down.
“It might take awhile,” says a sympathetic Jay Harris. “But I’m sure they’ll find something.”
And for those who miss him too — Rivera’s last entrance at Yankee Stadium, complete with “Enter Sandman.”
