Last month, Forbes magazine came out with a list of its top 10 performers– a list based on degrees of fame and money. This time out, we’re only talking money. And the top 10 actors are all male. AND they are almost all action or comic book superheroes. At they very top is Robert Downey Jr., who made $75 million last year. The secret is to star in a hugely successful movie like Iron Man that spawns all sorts of sequels that now cannot be made without you.
Dwayne Johnson has the same idea: – he ranks second on the list with an estimated $52 million mostly thanks to his work in movies like the Fast and Furious franchise. But up next: Hercules. This will be the first time he’s headlined a movie. He has another big action flick, San Andreas, lined up for next summer.
Bradley Cooper is in third place with $46 million in earnings. Cooper manages to make both quality movies that get him Oscar nominations like American Hustle, and big blockbusters, like The Hangover franchise. Cooper is voicing Rocket Raccoon in the upcoming Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy.
Leonardo DiCaprio ranks 4th with an estimated $39 million in earnings. DiCaprio is the rare actor who can earn $15 million and up movies like The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street. DiCaprio does not play superheroes, but he dates supermodels. Almost the same thing. I would also argue he spends the most….
Newcomer Chris Hemsworth, ranks 5th on the list with $37 million. Two hugely successful Thor movies did the trick, but now Hemsworth is after an Oscar -. This year he’ll star in films by prestige directors Michael Mann and Ron Howard, and, in case you haven’t heard, the new Thor is a woman, so that will save everyone money.
For the record, Angelina Jolie is top earning actress in Hollywood, but at $30 million, she earns less than the top 10 actors.
