Ford Fest is a go for tonight at Thompson Park in Scarborough. Teen girl, Annaleise Carr is swimming across Lake Erie hoping to set a new record. Air Algerie wreckage found, 5 Canadians died in the crash.
FORD FEST TONIGHT
Ford Fest is set to rock at Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough tonight despite complaints by more than 100 residents who say the annual barbecue amounts to nothing more than a glorified campaign event for Rob Ford. City by laws prohibit the use of any park, civic square or other facility for the “use or promotion of a particular candidate or political party” during an election, but the mayor has continually stated that Ford Fest — which has been held since 1995 — has nothing to do with his campaign and is in fact about “giving back” to Torontonians. Three city park staff and three by-law enforcement officers will be in attendance at tonight’s event to ensure that it does not break any rules.
INFORMER SINGER SNOW SUPPORTS ROB FORD
Mayor Ford was ‘informed’ he had support from 90’s rapper Snow when he dropped by his office Thursday. Snow said he came to show support as Ford has been supportive of his community. “I grew up in Allenberry (Gardens) – a housing project,” Snow said. “I know he’s done a lot for the people who have been there, especially in my community – the people just love him in there.” The rapper said that despite the mayor’s public behaviour, he’s done a good job. “You’ve got to look at his statistics. He’s done everything good. He’s the best mayor we’ve ever had,” Snow said. While he admitted he doesn’t follow politics too closely, the artist said Ford’s support for his community is enough for him.
TEEN GIRL SWIMMING ACROSS LAKE ERIE
A teen girl — the youngest to swim across Lake Ontario two years ago — is now taking on an even bigger challenge: a marathon swim across Lake Erie. Annaleise Carr is hoping to make history as she has started her 75-kilometre trek early this morning at Presque Ile State Park in Erie, Penn. The record-breaking swim is also a fundraiser to send kids with cancer to camp. Her swim will end in Port Dover, and is estimated to take about 30 hours. Carr’s 2012 swim raised $115,000 for Camp Trillium.
AIR ALGERIE CRASH
An Air Algerie jetliner carrying 116 people — including five Canadians — crashed Thursday in a rainstorm over restive Mali, and its wreckage was found near the border of neighbouring Burkina Faso. It was the third major international aviation disaster in a week. No one survived the crash that disappeared from radar after diverting from its planned course due to bad weather. Mali will lead the investigation into the crash. Air Algerie is Algeria’s national airline, with flights to 28 countries.
MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 17
More bodies from MH17 are expected to arrive in the Netherlands today. The Boeing 777 was shot down by a suspected surface-to-air missile last week over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. Heavy allegations now come from the United States: Washington says it has proof that Russia is firing into Ukraine. “We have … evidence that Russia is firing artillery from within Russia to attack Ukrainian military positions,” said Marie Harf, State Department spokeswoman. The Ukrainian government has been battling pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine. More than 400 people have died in the fighting.
