POLL: TORY TAKES BIG LEAD IN MAYORAL RACE
Although Rob Ford is gaining ground in the mayoral race, people still seem a little hesitant to put their faith back in the current mayor. According to a new poll from Nanos Research, John Tory has opened up a sizeable lead in the race to become Toronto’s next mayor. The telephone poll of 1,000 Torontonians has found Tory with 42% of the vote, Rob Ford with 28%, Olivia Chow with 26% & David Soknacki with 3%.
APPLE DISTANCES ITSELF FROM CELEBRITY NUDE PHOTO HACKING
Apple is trying to distance itself from the latest celebrity nude photo hacking. Apple says the leak of nude photos was a result of celebrity accounts that were individually targeted. Apple says there was no systemic hack of its iCloud system, no bug or vulnerability in its code. “After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet,” the company stated.
RUMOURS OF SIDNEY CROSBY ARREST IN OTTAWA ARE FALSE
Rumours of Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby being arrested by Ottawa Police late Tuesday while driving a rented Porsche is a lie. Sgt. Steve Hodgson of the Ottawa Police says there is no truth to news reports that Sidney Crosby was arrested in Ottawa last night. “This is a total, out-and-out blatant lie, as far as I know,” Hodgson said on Wednesday at about 6:20 a.m.
BIEBER CHARGED WITH ASSAULT AND DANGEROUS DRIVING
Justin Bieber was arrested and has been charged with dangerous driving and assault following a collision between a paparazzi minivan and his ATV northeast of his hometown of Stratford. This is Bieber’s second time being charged this year in Canada and it could pose legal issues south of the border, where he is currently on probation. Looks like we might get stuck with him.
CHOW VOWS TO HIKE LAND TRANSFER TAX
For multi-million dollar homes, Olivia Chow has vowed to raise the land transfer tax on them by 1% in an effort to generate $20 million a year for expanding school nutrition programs, increase rush-hour bus service and move forward with an engineering study on a potential downtown relief subway line, if she is elected mayor. Currently the land transfer tax is 2% for homes $400,000 and up but Chow’s plan would add a third bracket at 3% on homes valued at more than $2 million. The municipal land transfer tax is additional to a provincial land transfer tax and provides the city with about $350 million in annual revenue.
