Oscar Pistorius found guilty of culpable homicide. With 7hrs left to withdraw / file for the mayoral race, will Doug throw his hat in? Smart watches may dance around distracted driving laws.
PISTORIUS FOUND GUILTY OF CULPABLE HOMICIDE
After being cleared of murder charges yesterday, a judge has found Oscar Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) in the Valentine’s Day death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Judge Thokozile Masipa explained to the court that not enough evidence was provided to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Pistorius was guilty of premeditated murder or murder. Aswell, Pistorius was found guilty on one of three firearms charge. Pistorius could face up to 15 years in jail, the maximum time for a culpable homicide charge.
2PM DEADLINE: WHO’S IN AND WHO’S OUT OF THE MAYORAL RACE?
With the shocking news of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s hospital admittance and tumour in his abdomen, many are speculating the possibility of Ford withdrawing his name from the mayoralty ballot to focus on his health and recovery. If Ford opts to focus on his health rather than the business of the city, the question then arises: What of the Ford Nation vote? On the one hand, if Ford withdraws from the race, we could potentially see a head-to-head battle between John Tory and Olivia Chow, with Ford nations vote most likely swinging in Tory’s favour. On the other, Ford Nation still has the potential of seeing a replacement in the mayor’s brother, Councillor Doug Ford, who has until the 2pm deadline today to register his name on the ballot for the October 27 election. While neither option is optimal for Ford Nation, the the latter alternative would appease Ford voters much more. Recent weeks have seen Rob Ford’s campaign on the up-swing, with several polls showing his support among Torontonians growing, overtaking Olivia Chow for second-place. With only six weeks left before the election day, brother Doug could potentially take the hand-off and rush in for a Ford Nation touchdown. Doug Ford declined to comment Wednesday when asked by reports at hospital if he would step-in for a potential departure by his brother. Ford simply stated that the future of the campaign would be revealed shortly.
SMART WATCHES DANCE AROUND DISTRACTED DRIVING LAWS
Is there any law that people pay less attention to than the distracted driving law? And to make matters worse, when it comes to the rules about distracted driving, Apple has thrown a curve ball into them with the unveiling of their new smart watch, the Apple Watch. Due out early next year, the Apple Watch features a touch screen and scrolling crown that allows people to read text messages, emails and even answer phone calls from their wrist. Although there is no on-screen keyboard, you still can draw messages on the watch and use the “walkie talkie” feature to have a conversation with someone. This has the police saying the rules are unclear when it comes to using a smart watch while driving. “The actual offense of distracted driving speaks specifically to holding a handheld device. Because it’s not necessarily being hand held, by definition it would probably be a tough thing to proceed on,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in an interview. The province instituted a ban on using handheld devices while driving in 2009, including viewing display screens that aren’t related to driving. Hands-free devices however, are still allowed as defined by the Ministry of Transportation as technology that is “not held during use” and which the driver is “not physically interacting with or manipulating.”
SOURCE: GOODELL KNEW RICE HIT FIANCEE BACK IN JUNE
4 sources have told ESPN that Ray Rice told NFL commissioner Roger Goodell when they met on June 16 that he punched his then-fiancée Janay Rice in an Atlantic City elevator. The report conflicts with Goodell’s statement earlier this week. In a one-on-one interview on Tuesday, Goodell told CBS News that the video of Rice striking his fiancée that TMZ released – was “inconsistent” with what he was previously informed. These 4 sources – reportedly close to Rice – say Goodell was well aware of the exact situation. “Ray didn’t lie to the commissioner,” a source with knowledge of the meeting told ESPN. “He told the full truth to Goodell. He made it clear he had hit her and he told Goodell he was sorry and that it wouldn’t happen again.” Many are calling for the resignation of Roger Goodell as NFL commissioner.
WEST QUEEN WEST THE 2ND “COOLEST” NEIGHBOURHOOD IN THE WORLD
Vogue has given Toronto’s West Queen West neighbourhood some high praising in this month’s magazine issue, ranking it as the second “coolest” neighbourhood in the world. Toronto’s hipster neighbourhood fell just behind Shimokitazawa, Tokyo — rated number 1– out of 15 on the magazine’s September list. West Queen West was recognized for its “verifiable artery of indie patisseries,” “homegrown labels” and “hidden-from-view galleries.” Landmarks mentioned in Vouge’s article include The Drake Hotel, The Gladstone and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. Canal Saint-Martin in Paris also got a tip of the cap as some of the world’s “coolest” neighbourhoods
