Toronto Dad Poses As Daughter Online To Bust US Cyber Stalker
Cliff Ford went to great lengths to protect his daughter safe from an online predator.
He helped U.S. authorities bust a child exploitation ring, based in Ohio, by engaging in a long-term exchange with a stranger who emailed his daughter with the subject line “Hey Sexy”.
His daughter began messaging with a stranger in an online chat room before she received the email.
She informed her father, Cliff, about the relationship. He then posed as his daughter to learn as many details about the stranger as possible. It turns out it was Nicholas Bowers from Akron, Ohio.
Cliff took the information he had gathered to Toronto Police, who then contacted local Ohio authorities and the FBI. Bowers was arrested on January 14th.
Signy Arnason, the director of Cybertip.ca and an executive at the Canadian Centre for Child Protection in Winnipeg, advises parents against doing their own investigating, saying that police are better equipped to do it.
Bill Carroll from our brother station AM640 spoke with Cliff Ford:
Is Cliff Ford the best dad ever? Do you think Cliff did the right thing? Would you have taken the same approach? How closely do you monitor your child’s online activity?
