TEMPERATURES TO PLUNGE AS DEEP FREEZE NEARS
The GTA is expecting some nasty weather over the next few days from freezing rain and snowsqualls to frigid temperatures.This morning there are snowsquall watches and warnings in place for areas around Toronto, including Vaughan, Newmarket, Pickering and Oshawa. Later this week we’ll see high temperatures no better than -14.
PARKING ENFORCEMENT BLITZ IN TORONTO BEGINS TODAY
It’s back to the regular routine today for many in the GTA and that means battling the morning commute. Starting today, Toronto cops are stepping up enforcement of the rules so there will be zero-tolerance for vehicles blocking lanes on main roads during rush hour and that includes delivery trucks. While police are cracking down on drivers who clog-up the city, the public works committee is going to start looking at ways to permanently ease gridlock. They’re checking out a 7.7 million dollar plan that includes a “smart signals” pilot program for better synchronization of signal lights and creating a mobile app to better communicate with drivers.
GO TRANSIT ADDING NEW TRIPS IN HAMILTON & MILTON
Starting Monday, GO Transit will be adding two new weekday GO train trips on the Milton train line. The additions include a weekday morning eastbound trip, leaving Milton at 8:30 am, making all stops to Union Station, arriving at 9:30 am, and an afternoon westbound trip, leaving Union at 3:40 pm, making all stops and arriving at Milton for 4:38 pm. The new trains will be creating some changes to its current schedule, refer to their website for a complete list of train schedules. On Saturday, GO also added two new departures to its Hamilton express bus Route 16, between Hamilton and Toronto – but only for Friday trips. The added buses leave Union at 1:45 pm and 2:15 pm, arriving at the Hamilton GO station for 3:05 pm and 3:45 pm. Also in effect on Saturday was the discontinued westbound weekday 8:11 am bus from Aldershot GO station to McMaster University. Any buses discontinued during the post-secondary winter breaks are now in operation.
BILL COSBY’S ONTARIO SHOWS WILL GO ON
Bill Cosby’s name will be front and centre in southern Ontario this week as the embattled comedian makes stops for 3 shows. There have been a flurry of sexual assault allegations against him although he has not been criminally charged and has denied the claims. Despite local protests, Cosby is set to perfom in Kitchener on Wednesday, London on Thursday and Hamilton on Friday.
CANADA WILL FACE RUSSIA IN WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL TODAY
Team Canada is advancing to the gold medal game in the World Junior Championship after beating Slovakia 5-1 in the semifinals. Chants of “We Want Russia” and “We Want Gold” echoed through the ACC as team Canada reached the final minutes of the game. Despite rolling over Slovakia in the qualify rounds Team Canada had a hard fought game with Godla cashing in 39 saves. Canada’s Nice Petan scored a hat trick along with goals from Shea Theodore and Anthony Duclair. Slovakia will face Sweden in the bronze medal game. Puck drops at 8pm for Canada and Russia.
