Mo's Digital Last Word: THE GLOBES
It was a sweaty, orange evening at the Golden Globes last night. It was as if the Oompa Loompas were visiting the Jersey Shore. Channing Tatum, Jennifer Aniston, Sienna Miller, who really was sienna. Orange was the new black, and sweaty is the new condition.
It looked like Prom to me – just a big ole prom.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler brought their scorching best.
It was a little Cosby heavy, and the North Korea bits were godawful, with Margaret Cho playing Kim Young Un’s representative, but you had to love their version of who’d you rather: —”Alejandro Iñárritu – director of Birdman: one take, two hours, no stopping, or Richard Linklater, director of Boyhood: five minutes, once a year.”
Actually, many of their jokes objectified men in a jokey way, but, you know, once every century or so, it’s only fair.
Some of the Globe winners themselves were a bit of a head scratcher. Some solid choices: Boyhood and Birdman won large, Michael Keaton won Best Actor in a Comedy, Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor in a Drama for The Theory of Everything, with Wes Anderson’s Grand Hotel Budapest taking best comedy.
The Hollywood Foreign Press stepped out of the box, though, giving prizes to JK Simmons (Whiplash), Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent, Jane the Virgin for being a virgin, all brave, original choices, but The Affair? Seriously? Best TV drama AND Ruth Wilson for Best Actress? Better than House of Cards? Game of Thrones? I don’t think it deserved to win, and I’m a regular watcher!
The Hollywood Foreign Press clearly smokes more than Gitanes
Amal Clooney stole the show, and she’s not even an actress. George Clooney’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B DeAwesome award ended up being about how much he loves being her husband. She refused to take part in the mani-cam antics on the red carpet, she described her perfect Dior gown in fluent Arabic, told the interviewer, when asked whose white gloves she was wearing, that they were her own.
If the Golden Globes were a high school prom, Amal was George’s college girlfriend.
