Silver Dollar Room now a heritage site
Over its 50-plus year history, this venue has played host to the likes of Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, the Barenaked Ladies and Blue Rodeo.
The Silver Dollar Room has been granted official heritage designation.
The concert spot received preservation status Tuesday when a bylaw to protect it came into effect.
The landmark venue on Spadina north of College St. was given the status when City council deemed the property “of cultural heritage value or interest.”
That venue was built in 1958 as a lounge for the adjacent Hotel Waverly and has seen many incarnations over the years including a strip joint.
A proposal to demolish the hotel and Silver Dollar to make way for a 22-storey high rise was turned down by council in January 2014.
This could also be part of a bigger plan to create a cultural corridor along Spadina that would include the El Mocambo and Grossman’s Tavern.
