Sam Smith is paying Tom Petty songwriting royalties for his single ‘Stay With Me’ after listeners noticed a similarity between the song and Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ ‘I Won’t Back Down’. Word is it was pointed out early on and Sam Smith’s people never fought it and agreed to pay. Tom Petty and co-writer Jeff Lynne, will get a 12.5% writing credit for “Stay with Me.” The song has sold over six million copies worldwide and is up for Record of the Year at the 2015 Grammys.
