Mo's Digital Last Word: SUNDANCE KIDS
The Sundance Film festival is in full gear over in Park City, Utah. At least two films are getting a lot of attention – one is a first time effort called “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”, which was picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight for a record 12 million.
I know that doesn’t sound like a lot, but at Sundance people sell their films for tuque money.
The other is a documentary called “Going Clear”, by Alex Gibney, a searing expose of Scientology and the people who support it, including John Travolta and Tom Cruise.
The story is that Travolta can’t leave the Church because they have reams of incriminating information about him.
As for Cruise, there’s speculation about his relationship with the head of the Church, David Miscavige.
The film essentially calls on Cruise to expose the Church to bring to light the abuse inflicted on its members.
The filmmakers have received threats from Scientology, mostly legal, and security around the screenings was heavy. Amon other revelations, the film alleges Scientology to have fewer than 50,000 members worldwide but more than $1 billion in assets.
