Science Is Why No One Agrees on the Color of This Dress
The internet is up to all sorts of tricks this week. People are going absolutely bananas over an image of a dress that is either blue and black or white and gold.
It all started when a woman in Scotland, and Tumblr blogger Swiked, posted a picture of a dress she was thinking of wearing to a wedding, white and gold dress yesterday… Or is it black and blue?
In the below picture: The original image is in the middle. At left, white-balanced as if the dress is white-gold. At right, white-balanced to blue-black
For the past day and a half, people on social media have battled over whether the picture depicts a dress as blue with black lace fringe or white with gold lace fringe.
Neither side will budge on what they see. The reason: biology and the way human eyes and brains have evolved to see color in the world.
The photograph of the dress is seen differently by different people at different times – depending on how the light hits your eye at different times of the day, the colour of the background, what sign you are, and the phase of the moon.
So here’s the question: What colour IS the dress? Do you see white and gold? Or do you see black and blue?
Take the Q poll below:
For the record, the dress in real life is blue and black. End of story.
