OMBUDSMEN TO RELEASE REPORT INTO HYDRO ONE BILLING PRACTICES
We’ll get a report today from the Ontario’s Ombudsman about the billing practices of Hydro One. Andre Marin says he’s received more than 10,000 complaints from the public over the past year. The biggest problems surround huge “estimated” bills, large payments being automatically withdrawn from bank accounts and incorrect billing info.
OSSTF SAYS NEGOTIATIONS AT IMPASSE
Teachers on strike in Durham region start their 6th week on the picket lines this morning, while Peel public high school teachers are starting week 4. Weekend contract talks involving a mediator broke off and now the OSSTF plans to go to the ministry of labour for conciliation. The Education Relations Commission is also determining whether the strikes are putting the school year in jeopardy. The Education Minister says, “the government will take the appropriate action as quickly as possible,” following a negotiation stand still between the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation and the province.
NEW CARRY ON RULES FOR AIR CANADA KICK OFF TODAY
Air Canada will begin clamping down on carry-on baggage today at Pearson. The new regulations mean airline staff will be stationed at both check-in and security checkpoints to make sure carry-on bags meet size and weight requirements. Bags that meet the airline’s carry-on dimensions will receive a red tag, a move the airline says will help reduce wait times at security. Carry-on bags which exceed the regulations will need to be checked and a standard fee of $25 will apply. Transport Canada rules allow passengers to carry on two unchecked items including a personal item can include a backpack, briefcase or laptop computer measuring up to 16 by 33 by 43 centimetres and a standard carry on like a suitcase measuring up to 23 by 40 by 55 centimetres including wheels and handles. The tagging program will expand to other airports across the country through June.
TTC AND TORY ANNOUNCE IMPROVED SERVICE
Mayor John Tory is vowing to improve service to 61 bus routes in Toronto. The Mayor announced upgrades which include overnight service. The announcement was made at a bus shelter near Kennedy station. It’s part of the $90 million transit budget, and the improvements are expected for early September. They will have to go before the TTC board for approval, first, which is expected on May 27. The recommendations are for new and restored off-peak bus services with expanded overnight bus and streetcar routes. The expanded coverage of the overnight should result in 99 per cent of Toronto residents living within a 15-minute walk of overnight bus and streetcar service.
‘SUICIDE SQUAD’ FILM SHOOT TO SUT DOWN PARTS OF YONGE FOR 3 NIGHTS
The filming of the latest multi-million dollar Hollywood blockbuster will continue to take over Toronto streets tonight. The “Suicide Squad” has already unexpectedly caused the temporary closure of the GO Transit terminal at Union Station earlier this month, stranding several commuters. Now a high-speed car chase scene will shut down Yonge Street, from Queen to College street, from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On the weekend filming kept Wellington Street West closed from Yonge to York streets and Bay Street from Lake Shore Boulevard to King Street West. The movie which stars Will Smith and Jared Leto among others is scheduled to hit theatres next summer.
Actress, comedian Anne Meara, wife of Jerry Stiller and mom of Ben, dies at 85
Actress Ann Meara best know for being part of a comic team with husband Jerry Stiller, and Ben Stiller’s mother has died at 85. Meara’ s most notable performances included being grandma Tanner in the series Alf, as well as having recurring roles in Sex and The City, & King Of Queens. Meara was married to Comedic partner Jerry Stiller for 61 years, and the duo performed as a team on a a number of variety shows including “The Ed Sullivan Show” Her death was confirmed by both Stillers. No further details were given.
“A Beautiful Mind” mathematician Jon Nash dead in car crash
The man who was the focus of the movie “A Beautiful Mind” has died in a car crash near New Jersey. 86 year old Jon Nash and his 82 year old wife Alicia died when their Taxi lost control and hit another car and a guard rail near Monroe township. Nash is the real life mathematician Russell Crowe portrayed in the 2001 Oscar winning movie . Born Jon Forbes Nash, the Princeton mathematician is know for being one of the best in the 20th century despite suffering with paranoid schizophrenia.
