WHAT’S OPEN & CLOSED ON CANADA DAY
Canada will mark its 148th birthday Wednesday and that means a number of closure and adjusted schedules around the GTA. While a number of places will be closed there will still be plenty to do. Libraries, daycares, post offices, banks, beer and liquor stores and city of Toronto offices will all be closed along with some grocery stores. The TTC and GO Transit will be running on holiday service. Yorkdale, Fairview mall and Sherway gardens are closed but Eaton centre, Square one and Vaughan Mills will all be open. The ROM, AGO, Science centre, Toronto zoo, Ripley’s Aquarium will also be open.
ALL 401 LANES REOPEN AT TRAFALGAR
There was a major crash this morning that crippled the morning commute on the 401 through Mississauga. The 401 eastbound was closed for several hours Tuesday morning after a single vehicle rollover in Milton. Emergency officials were called at 4:07 a.m. after the minivan rolled over near Trafalgar. OPP sergeant Kerry Schmidt says the 15 year old passenger of the vehicle had to be extricated from the vehicle and was airlifted to hospital with unknown injuries. The 48 year old driver managed to get out on his own and was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Schmidt speculated that there may have been a mechanical failure or a blown tire that caused the rollover.
WESTJET FLIGHT BOUND FOR TORONTO DIVERTED DUE TO THREAT
For the third time in five days there’s been a threat made to a Canadian passenger plane and it’s the second time a West Jet Flight in Canada has landed after an unknown threat. The WS442 flight heading to Toronto departing from Edmonton had to land in Winnipeg tonight because of a threat. The plane landed safely in Winnipeg and everyone aboard was evacuated. There were 54 passengers aboard and 5 crew members. West Jet says 6 passengers were injured during the evacuation. All the passengers were put up in hotels and will be flown to Toronto later this morning.
GREECE HOURS AWAY FROM DEFAULTING
The Prime Minister of Greece is encouraging his people to vote “no” in a referendum this coming weekend. With the country today set to default on its international loans, new rules will be put in place if it wants to stay in the European Union. The Prime Minister wants the country to reject the measures and go it alone.
MULCLAIR HAD SECRET MEETINGS WITH TORIES
A report out today finds that back in 2007, current NDP leader Tom Mulclair was in talks to join the Tories as a senior adviser on the environment. Many in the Conservative party felt that it was step-1 toward getting Mulclair to run for them in 2008. The deal never came through though, whether over money or policy.
