Conservatives Take Big Lead In Latest Poll
Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have taken a large lead in the latest poll from Mainstreet Research. The jump could be thanks to the distribution of $3-billion worth of child benefit cheques to parents earlier this week. The Poll has the Conservatives leading with 38% of decided voters. Thomas Mulcair’s NDP were in second at 27% and Justin Trudeau’s Liberals were third at 25%. It’s the first poll since Justin Trudeau was elected Liberal leader in the spring of 2013 that has had the Conservatives above 35%. The Conservatives have been between 27% and 32% in the nine polls published in the last month.
Queens Park Meeting Expected between Teacher’s Union and School Board
Premier Wynne will meet this morning with the leaders of Ontario’s school boards and teachers’ unions. She’s trying to head off labour chaos this fall when 2 million students are scheduled to head back to class. The Premier plans to remind all parties that they need to get back to the bargaining table and hammer out new contracts to avoid work-to-rule campaigns or full on strikes.
$400M Class Action Lawsuit Launched Against Uber In Ontario
A taxicab owner and operator has filed a class action lawsuit with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice against Uber. The suit is on behalf of all taxicab owners, taxicab drivers, taxicab brokers, limousine owners, limousine drivers and limousine service companies licensed, permitted or authorized to operate in The Province of Ontario. The Plaintiff, Dominik Konjevic, alleges that Uber Technologies, Inc., Uber Canada Inc., Uber B.V. and Rasier Operations B.V. (“the defendants”) and UberX Drivers conspired, agreed or arranged among themselves to arrange, or offer to arrange, for a passenger to be picked up by the UberX Drivers in a motor vehicle for transportation for compensation when they knew UberX Drivers were not licensed under the Highway Traffic Act causing the Plaintiff and the Class Members to suffer damages. The lawsuit seeks CDN$400M in compensatory damages, $10M in punitive damages and an injunction prohibiting UberX from continuing to operate in the Province of Ontario. Many of the Uber Black, Uber SUV and Uber Taxi drivers are properly licensed drivers who operate in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act governing the taxicab and limousine businesses in Ontario. However, the UberX and Uber XL Drivers, who are registered to use the UberX and UberXL services, do not conform with the Highway Traffic Act. The suit alleges that Uber and its UberX and Uber XL platforms knowingly created and control a business enterprise that would harm the business interests of the Plaintiff and the Class Members.
“Trainwreck” Movie Shooting In Louisiana
There’s been another massacre at a movie theatre stateside. A gunman has killed 2 people, wounded 7 more and then turned the gun on himself at a screening of the movie “Trainwreck” in Lafayette, Louisiana. Those in the theatre say the 58-year-old gunman just stood up and started shooting. The massacre in Lafayette came just hours after President Obama gave a poignant interview to the BBC about America’s gun problems and almost three years to the day after a massacre at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado, that killed 12 people.
