Deadly Attack and Hostage Taking in Mali
There’s been a deadly attack and hostage taking by at least 10 gunmen, which has claimed the lives of three people at a hotel in Mali. A number of sources report that Malian soldiers invaded the Radisson Blu Hotel in the centre of Bamako. According to an army commander with the Malian army, there are 80 hostages that have been freed. There are also 140 guests and 30 employees who are currently in the hotel and there are reports of French, Chinese and Turkish citizens who are among them. Malian special forces have entered the hotel to end the siege.
Third Body Found and Identified Following Raid in Paris
A third body has now been identified following the deadly raid that took place in Paris earlier this week. French authorities say a woman’s body was found overnight and it’s been confirmed that her name is Hasna Aitboulahcen, which in fact the first female suicide bomber in Europe to detonate her vest during a raid. She was know to police as the 26-year-old daughter of a Moroccan immigrant, who was under surveillance in connection to a drug-trafficking case. There has also been another victim identified in Wednesday’s raid in Saint-Denis and that is suspected mastermind Abdelhamid Abaauod.
Canadian Refugee Resettlement Plan to Cost $1.2-Billion
The price tag to bring Syrian refugees to Canada is expected to cost $1.2 billion over a six year period. According to the Canadian Press, the Trudeau government’s plan also shows it would need $877 million in this fiscal year. The polls show most Canadians are opposed to the government’s plan by a comparison of 54% against and 42% in favour. Canada would be looking at settling 25,000 refugees by the end of 2015.
Peace March for Muslim Woman Attacked Near Flemingdon Park
A peace march is scheduled to take place in Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park after the attack of a Muslim woman. The victim was physically beaten by two white men near Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East on Monday around 3:45 p.m. when she was on her way to Grenoble Public School to pick up her children. According to police, she was physically beaten and sent to hospital with minor injuries. The solidarity march takes place at 9:30 a.m.
Blue Jays’ Josh Donaldson Awarded American League MVP
Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson is being awarded the American League MVP. 29-year-old beat out Los Angeles Angels Mike Trout and Kansas City Royals Lorenzo Cain for the honor. Donaldson hit .297 with a league-best 123 runs. It’s the first time the Blue Jays have won an AL East title since 1993. The last and only Toronto Blue Jay to win the American League MVP Award was George Bell in 1987. Donaldson nabbed 23 of the 30 first-place votes and finished with 385 points. Trout got the remaining seven first place votes, 22 second-place votes, as well as one third-place vote. Cain took 20 third-place votes. Meanwhile, Bryce Harper took the National League MVP Award, he’s the youngest unanimous MVP winner in baseball history.
