A transgender student in Calgary says the next Canadian census should give people like her (him?) a third choice when it comes to stating gender. In other words, there should be a categories for Male and Female, and a third for Other. It’s not clear what this Other would include. People who are one gender but identify with another, or people who are transitioning from one sex to another? It’s complicated, but one benefit to this idea is that it would give the government a better idea of how many transgendered people there are out there, which could be reflected in better resources within the health care system. Right now, one can only take an educated guess.
While we’re at it, what IS the proper terminology? Never mind the census. What’s this going to do to the Pronoun Chart?
