Original Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler may have a role to play in the band’s upcoming reunion, according to Alternative Nation and comments posted online by That Metal Show host Eddie Trunk.
Although singer Axl Rose, guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan are the only original members confirmed so far for the band’s two shows at April’s Coachella Festival, Trunk wrote, “My sources have told me current GnR drummer Frank Ferrer will be retained and play the bulk of the show, with perhaps a guest appearance from Steven Adler if a deal can be worked out.”
Adler has been vocal about wanting a reunion to happen, despite his own long-term struggles with sobriety since he was fired from the band in 1990.
Slash, who remained close with Adler over the years and even once staged an intervention for him, told us a while back that Adler was sort of a kid at heart: “Steven is the epitome of, like, the rock ‘n’ roll teenager. He’s the most naive and most innocent of the bunch of us because he was just like, ‘I just want to play drums and f*** girls,’ and that’s all he really, really wanted to do. The more complicated it got, the more he couldn’t handle it.”
Meanwhile, Trunk also suggested that original guitarist Izzy Stradlin may show up for Coachella or other selected shows, although it seems likely that current Guns guitarist Richard Fortus will be retained. Trunk also stated that drummer Matt Sorum, who replaced Adler and stayed in the band until 1995, will have no involvement at all in the reunion. Longtime keyboardist Dizzy Reed and second keyboardist Chris Pitman may also be part of the lineup.
It’s also rumoured that the band may play some warm-up shows before Coachella, and then tour more extensively after the festival depending on the offers. The band is said to be asking for $3 – 8 million for stadium dates.
The 2016 Coachella Festival will take place on the weekends of April 15th through April 17th and April 22nd through April 24th at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Guns will play on April 16th and April 23rd.
