Canada’s legendary prog-rock band Saga hit the Phoenix for one of their only Canadian shows scheduled for this year so far and made the visit well worth it for fans.
Opening for them were hard rockers Suns of Stone who brought a brash, muscular presence to the stage with their modern rock sound. Crunchy, tough guitars coupled with melodic lyrics showed off an obvious Pearl Jam influence on these young musicians.
Next were instrumental outfit David Barrett Trio, who engaged the crowd thoroughly even without a vocalist. A furious, frenetic drummer and a virtuoso performance on a double necked guitar no doubt added to the energy, as did a guest appearance by Michael Sadler of Saga himself.
Saga then hit the stage with their multitudes of keyboards and decades of radio hits. Simultaneously spacey and grounded, these local legends gave the crowd everything they wanted and more, with Sadler as vibrant and powerful as he was thirty years ago. Along with massive hit singles “Wind Him Up” and “On the Loose”, the band played material from their huge catalogue and satisfied all. Best of luck to them on their upcoming tour in Germany.
