Spring is coming up quickly. Here is a list to prepare you for some of the events taking place around Toronto.
#1. Film Festivals
There are many film festivals taking place around the city of the next couple months. The Canadian Film Festival takes place March 30th until April 2nd. Hot Docs takes place between April 28th and May 8th. The TIFF Kids International Film Festival takes place between April 8th and April 24th and the Images Festival takes place between April 14th and April 23rd. Pick whatever piques your interest and catch a great movie.
We all know that you spent the winter months getting ready to show off that hot bod for the summer months. If you want to start a little early, show off your athletic finesse at one of the marathons taking place around the city. The GoodLife Toronto Marathon and the Mississauga Marathon both take place on May 1st, the Run for Women Unionville takes place May 7th and the Walk for Life takes place on May 28th. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, take part in the Color Me Rad 5K that takes place on May 28th.
#4. Toronto Public Gardens in Bloom
There are many different gardens you can take a walk in throughout the city. The Toronto Botanical Garden is located at Lawrence Avenue East and Leslie Street. It has both a garden shop to buy plants & seed and a café where you can take a break from your walk. You can also venture through the gardens at Casa Loma or the Humber Bay Butterfly Habitat.
#5. See a Baby Animal
Lots of baby animals will be gracing our city this spring. Check out the panda cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue or Juno the polar bear cub at the Toronto Zoo. If you are looking to check out some more unique animals, head out to Reptilia to see some snakes and other reptiles, or go to High Park to see baby llamas, reindeer and bison.
#6. Spring Food Festivals
The Toronto Dumpling and Sake Fest is a competition between Toronto chefs to see who can make the best dumpling. The Songkran Festival celebrates the Thai New Year and often includes tasty Thai foods and a water balloon fight. Toronto Taste takes place on June 12th lakeside at Corus Quay. Dishes are made by top chefs and all proceeds go to Second Harvest.
#7. Local Farmers’ Markets
Starting in May and June, many different farmers’ markets will be popping up around the city. To see a full list of markets around the city, click here.
#8. Toronto Food Trucks
Now that the weather will be nicer, more food trucks will be popping up around the city. There are so many around the city and this website will help you locate the one that is closest to you.
#9. Paddle the Don River
The Manulife Paddle the Don takes place on May 1st this year. All registration fees go towards preserving the Don River Watershed. You can participate in the event by paddling in the river or by cheering on a friend.
#10. Canadian Music Week
Celebrate Canadian music by attending one of the Canadian Music Week shows. Headliners include X Ambassadors, Tegan and Sarah, Collective Soul, The Strumbellas and The Black Lips. Tickets are on sale now.
#11. Anime North
Anime North takes place at the Toronto Congress Centre and International Plaza Hotel starting on May 27th until May 29th. The convention includes tables of anime and manga for sale, artists displaying their work and a dance. Guests include anime and manga writers, cosplayers and actors.
Grab your pup and attend Woofstock. Woofstock celebrates everything dog with many different vendors and activities you can complete with your dog. A show featuring talent pups is also included in the festivities.
#13. Free Comic Book Day
Grab a free comic or two on May 7th. Each store has a different policy on how many free comics they will give away so it is better to get there earlier rather than later. For a list of comic book stores participating in your area, click here.
Instead of Yonge-Dundas Square, North by Northeast will be hosted at the Port Lands this year. Ticketed events will be talking places around the city, including Lee’s Palace, the Mod Club and the Opera House. This five day festival hasn’t released any headliners, so you will have to stay tuned to find out who will be playing.
