If you’re caught up in American politics and currently obsessing over what’s going on in the states, then you’ll be happy to know that there are a myriad of television shows and web series’ that may peak your interest. Here are some shows that might just help you to understand what makes politicians tick.
The Good Wife
“The Good Wife” is a drama about a wife and mother who assumes responsibility for her family. She re-enters the workforce after her husband’s, Peter’s, very public sex scandal and political corruption scandal that lands himself in jail. The wife, Alicia, starts over her own life by pursuing her original career as a defense attorney. Alicia transforms herself from an embarrassed politician’s wife to a prominent career woman. Since her husband is back home and planning on running for office again, Alicia continues to redefine herself and the role in her family’s life.
House of Cards
“House of Cards” surrounds the political like of Frank Underwood, portrayed by Kevin Spacey. Frank Underwood is a Democrat from South Carolina’s 5th congressional district and House Majority Whip, and after being passed over for appointment as Secretary of State, he wants a bigger piece of the pie, or in this case he wants a greater position of power.
Aided by his wife, Claire Underwood, he wants everyone to know who he is. This series deals primarily with themes of manipulation, power and ruthlessness. This political drama has won awards and currently on its fourth season on Netflix.
Michael Kelly who plays Doug Stamper in “House of Cards” is quoted saying that he spends quite a bit of time in DC and that while on visits there he is constantly told by staffers how much his character on the show resembles real life people they work with. Although the show might be outlandish, it’s not that far from reality.
“Madam Secretary” follows the life of Elizabeth McCord, the brilliant yet extremely determined Secretary of State who drives international diplomacy, battles office politics and ignores protocol as she negotiates worldwide issues.
She is also a college professor and a former CIA analyst who left the agency for personal and ethical reasons. After the suspicious death of her predecessor, Elizabeth returns to public life at the President’s request. Elizabeth does have a husband, Henry who is an Ethics professor and they both have three children: Stephanie, Allison and Jason.
“Political Animals” is an American Comedy-Drama mini series created by Greg Berlanti. This series is about Elaine Barrish, who is a divorced former first lady and Governor of Illinois, as well as the current Secretary of State. Sigourney Weaver, who portrays Elaine Barrish, and the show’s production team acknowledge that the lead character has some similarities to Hillary Clinton.
The production team states that the show itself is about “families who have been in the White House and the price they’ve paid for being there, including the fact that those same families will often try or continue to get back into the White House again.” This is one miniseries you really want to watch.
“Homeland” is a television series developed by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa. This show was based upon the Israeli series “Hatufim” (Translation: Prisoners of War). “Homeland”, is about a woman by the name of Carrie Mathison, a CIA officer with bipolar disorder, and Nicholas Brody, a United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper.
Mathison had come to believe that Brody, who was held captive by al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war, was “turned” by the enemy and poses a threat to the United States.
It has won numerous awards, from Globes to Emmys, and currently is renewed for it’s sixth season. This is one of Barack Obama’s favourite shows and is also watched by the likes of Hillary Clinton and her husband. Get buckled in and watch the drama unfold.
The West Wing
“The West Wing” is an American political drama television series created by Aaron Sorkin. It was originally broadcasted between the years of 1999 to 2006, and remains one of the best series among critics.
The series was set in the West Wing, hence the title, where the offices of the presidential senior staff are located during a false Democratic administration of Josiah Bartlet (which is portrayed by Martin Sheen).
If you want a trip down memory lane, this is the show to watch. Filled with drama and suspense, this show will have you binge watching the whole series, if you haven’t already watched it.
“Veep” is an American television series, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus (famously from “Seinfield”). “Veep” is set in the office of Selina Meyer (Julia) who is a fictional Vice President, and subsequent president of the United States (later on in the series). The job is nothing like she imagined and everything she was warned about.
The show follows the life of Meyer and her staff as they attempt to make their mark, without getting into the political games in Washington. “Veep” is currently on HBO and is gearing up for the fifth season, which will premiere on April 24, 2016. This show has won numerous awards and critical acclaim, from Emmy’s to Golden Globes, to Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump
If you really want to watch someone or at least a group of people stick it to Donald Trump, this is the best cure. Included on the roster of roasters was Snoop Dogg, Lisa Lampanelli, Jeff Ross, Anthony Jeselnik, Seth MacFarlane, Marlee Matlin, Whitney Cummings, Mike Sorrentino, Larry King and a surprise visit from Gilbert Gottfried.
Watch out for Marlee Matlin, Whitney Cummings, Anthony Jeselnik and Jeff Ross, their roasts set the tone for the entire show. This is the stuff that comedy gold is made out of. This episode was also dedicated to the late and great Greg Giraldo. Enjoy while you watch everything they say make you laugh in hysterics.
