Did you hear about this kid who lied about his age to get into Canada? He’s actually a 29 year old man from South Sudan, but he applied for a student visa claiming to be 17. Jonathan Nicola was accepted at a school in Windsor, where he played basketball for the school team, and it wasn’t until he needed to travel to the U.S. that authorities discovered that he was, in fact, born in 1986. Now Jonathan says he didn’t KNOW he was 29 – that his mother never told him his real age, and he really believed he was 17.
If we didn’t have birth certificates, or celebrate birthdays – if we just grew up and lived and didn’t count the years, would we KNOW how old we were? I think we would know the difference between youth and middle age and so on, but we wouldn’t know – or care – if we were 25 or 35. Age really would be just a number. Which isn’t true, because it’s actually word.
