MPs Vote To Make ‘O Canada’ Gender Neutral, Pending Senate Approval
O Canada is closer to getting an overhaul with more gender-neutral lyrics.
Members of Parliament voted 225-74 Wednesday night in favour of amending the lyrics of Canada’s national anthem.
It was the third and final reading for Bill C-210, a private member’s bill put forth by Liberal MP Mauril Belanger. Belanger, who is gravely ill with ALS, was present in the House for the vote.
The proposed change would be to the second line of O Canada, swapping “true patriot love, in all thy sons command” with “in all of us command.”
The Conservatives have opposed the anthem change, but in the end were not able to stop the bill from heading to the Senate.
Most Liberal and New Democrat MPs have shown support for the change.
