The Tragically Hip played the final night of their current tour in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario last night (August 20th, 2016) where it all began. It wasn’t always like this, according to Gord Downie there were only a handful of people in the bar the first time they played in Kingston and then the next time it was a few more and the next time after that all the girls left because all the boys were getting drunk and fighting. Luckily they came back—the girls that is.
It WAS a national celebration, it was a regional celebration, it was a neighborhood celebration and they touched a lot of people either there live at the K-Rock centre and another few thousand watching the CBC from outside the venue. They were expecting a crowd but WHOA—good for The Hip.
Need to shout out to CBC TV Radio and interactive who did a phenomenal job with the whole production and thank you People’s network for allowing the odd f word to fly..Oh ok quite a few f words in that new song on their latest album, Man Machine Poem Tired as Fuck but they didn’t ruin the integrity of the song or the band.
Let’s just say so long for now and if Gord and his medical team feels he’s up for another round maybe just maybe (and this is the writer’s own opinion) they may head to the Eastern provinces and say bye there and IF they don’t then the curtain has fallen and the Tragically Hip have left the building and their legacy will live on.
Godspeed Gord Downie
