I think most of us have been bullied at some point in our lives, and some far worse than others. This little girl named Sophia is being bullied for her choice of hobby. She LOVES bugs and loves finding them. She brings them around with her, she searches of them and she touches them. She has a curious mind about nature.
Sadly, this is not “normal” to some people. Kids at school pick on her just because she likes bugs. She has been physically bullied, and verbally. Her Mom encouraged her to talk to the teacher, but there was no result. Her Mom claims the teachers ignored Sophia.
Sophia wants to be a bug hunter when she grows up, and just like any parent, her Mom said of course you can be that. You can be whatever you want to be.
Wanting to take it one step further, Sophia’s Mom reached out to the Entomology Society of Canada to ask for support.
Writing a beautiful letter explaining that her little girl loves bugs and wants to do something with them when she grows up, she was looking for those in the field to reach out to her daughter and to let her know she isn’t strange or weird for liking bugs.
Emails and letters have been pouring in, offering Sophia a tour of their facilities. Sophia was told of the responses and she fell on her bed and said “I must be dreaming”
She may be different from the other kids, BUT she fits right in with a whole lot of scientists who are currently working around the world.
