Hours before the first pitch of Game 3 of the A-L-C-S between Toronto and Cleveland on Monday, an Indigenous activist will head to court, in efforts to change something that has been around for over 100 years.
Douglas Cardinal is fighting to ban the name Cleveland “Indians” as well as its “Chief Wahoo” logo in Ontario, referring to both as racist and discriminatory.
His representatives say team members shouldn’t be allowed to wear their regular jerseys; he’s asking for a modified version instead, and that the team be referred to as “the Cleveland team.”
Cardinal is also asking the logo not be broadcast on television.
The case is being heard by the Ontario Superior Court.
