Another argument over a mind-boggling optical illusion has erupted on the internet once again.
Remember the debate about “The Dress” and whether it was white and gold or black and blue? The controversy swirling now is about whether a photo of a pair of legs are shiny or streaked with white paint.
So, what’s the right answer? The marks are white paint, and the photo offers a clue to their origin: the legs are surrounded by art supplies.
The whole debate started when Instagram user Hunter Culverhouse posted a photo of her legs covered in lines of white paint, but some people are seeing shiny, glossy legs instead.
When the original photo was posted last month the caption read, “I like the feeling of paint on my skin.”
Culverhouse told Insider’s Jacob Shamsian that the illusion was created by accident.
“[I] had some white paint left on my brush and put random lines on my legs, turned out to be a completely confusing picture for everyone on the internet,” Culverhouse wrote in an email.
She didn’t realize the picture was going viral until other people started commenting on it and sharing it with their friends.
“The first time I posted it, it didn’t go completely crazy,” Culverhouse wrote. “But then I reposted it again and other big accounts started to post it and share it. Then it took to Twitter and YouTubers started tweeting about it as well.”
Many people speculated that the legs were covered in baby oil or even plastic wrap, while others see only paint.
A Twitter user ignited the debate, and it’s safe to say social media is freaking out.
