This is the kind of news I like to hear. A cough and respiratory medicine expert claims that new research proves chocolate is a more effective method of treatment than cough syrup.
Professor Alyn Morice, head of cardiovascular and respiratory studies at the University of Hull in the U.K. AND and a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Cough (so this guy knows his stuff!) says chocolate can calm your bad cough. He says the proof is in a new European study of over-the-counter cough medicine. The study showed patients who took a new medicine containing cocoa had a significant improvement in their cough and sleeplessness within two days compared to those taking standard cough syrup.
Pigging out on chocolate isn’t what helps your throat though. Researchers say eating it slowly, sucking on the chocolate soothes the throat. The compounds in cocoa relieve inflammation and irritation and since it’s stickier than typical cough syrup it can form a coating to protect the nerve endings in the throat that trigger the urge to cough.
