It could be a messy commute Tuesday morning as freezing rain is expected to hit the region overnight.
Environment Canada has replaced a special weather statement with a freezing rain warning for most of southern Ontario.
The wet weather mix will begin Monday evening in southwestern Ontario and will reach Toronto overnight. It will continue to spread eastward into Tuesday morning.
Regions east towards Peterborough could see freezing rain last into Tuesday night.
Freezing rain of 2 to 5 mm is expected for Toronto and the GTA.
Ice build-up due to freezing rain is expected or already occurring.
Drivers are asked to consider postponing all non-essential travel until conditions improve.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy slippery and hazardous,” reads the freezing rain warning.
Branches and electrical wires could also break under the weight of the ice, causing utility outages.
