Joey Bats is coming back to Toronto.
The Blue Jays reached an agreement with the slugger to keep him here at least for another season. The contract is pending a physical, but includes a mutual option for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The MLB Network reports that the first year of the deal is worth $18 million, but Bautista could make as much as $60 million if he stays until 2019. The club hasn’t yet confirmed the agreement.
He originally rejected the Jays’ qualifying offer of $17.2 million earlier in the offseason to become a free agent.
Bautista has become a Toronto sports icon, so it’s great he will be back in a Blue Jays’ uniform. Since 2010, he has hit the most home runs (249) in the Majors. Despite last season being an off year because of two stints on the disabled list, Joey Bats still managed to hit .234 with 22 homers and 69 RBI.
He is due for a big year in 2017.
