The Late Show host is headed to the Emmys later this year.
Stephen Colbert will host the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, live at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 17. This will be the first time hosting the awards for Colbert, who has won nine Emmys for his work on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
The Emmys have been struggling for ratings in recent years. According to Nielsen data, the Emmys had 11.3 million viewers in 2016, which was down from 11.9 million in 2015. A theory as to why CBS chose Colbert to host is that perhaps a more politically charged broadcast will attract a larger audience. Case in point is with the recent Golden Globes, and Meryl Streep’s politicized speech that received millions of views online.
CBS issued a statement, saying “Stephen is the ultimate master of ceremonies with award-winning creative talents, and as we’ve seen the past few months, he has a fearless passion for live television.”
