Summer road construction is in full swing not to mention the many road closures for summer events in the city. When it comes to merging during lane closures many people are doing it wrong.
The City of Windsor for example will be putting zipper-merge signs on their E. C. Row Expressway hoping to show drivers the proper way to merge to keep traffic moving.
The zipper merge has been shown in traffic studies to be the safest and most efficient way for vehicles to enter a bottleneck. Drivers should delay merging until their lane actually ends and one at a time, like a zipper, they merge lanes. Some drivers move over sooner causing traffic to come to a halt and a creating an unused lane. Other times drivers refuse to let people driving in the lane that’s ending over into their lane.
Can’t we all just get along and share the road? It would make things move smoother.
And a thank you wave wouldn’t hurt either.
