Compact disc co-creators Sony and Philips say they still receive requests for an interview with the inventor of the CD, but that person doesn’t exist. Nobody invented one part of the technology alone. The CD was invented collectively by a large group of people working as a team.
The very first CD to roll off the production lines on August 17, 1982, was a copy of ABBA’s The Visitors, however, the first album to actually be released to the public on CD was Billy Joel’s 52nd Street. It came out on October 1, 1982.
Another interesting fact; The first CD to sell a million copies was Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms, which came out in 1985.
