Listener Submitted Question:
Listener: Dan

I have been trying to finish my basement for months. In the laundry room I don't know what to do with the ceiling. There is the furnace, water heater, piping, a window, etc. What ceiling is best for this? My wife is driving me nuts to finish it and leave her enough room. Help!!!!

Bryan’s Answer:

Hey Dan – truth be told, you don’t want to put a ceiling too close to the furnace! If building her a laundry spa in another area isn’t an option, I’d suggest a suspended, or ‘drop’ ceiling is the way to go. You’ll need to measure the dimensions of the room, determine how far you need to come down to hide all of the plumbing, electrical etc., and pick yourself up all of the components and tools you’ll need to get the job done.

You’ll need a sharp pencil, a measuring tape and a level to layout out the ceiling. You’ll also need screw-in eye hooks, hangar wire, wall angles, the main tees, cross tees and ceiling panels of your choice – and of course nails or screws to attach the wall angles, a pair of aviation snips or a hacksaw to cut the tees, and a pair of pliers to cut your hanger wire to length.

Read the instructions that come with the suspended ceiling components and you’ll be the laundry room hero in no time!
